by an Expert Safari Guide and Planner
“I’m not interested in going on safari.”
As a travel professional I often hear this phrase.
And it confuses me because it’s often from keen travellers to other destinations. And there are just so many incredible reasons to go on safari.
A good safari is far, far more than just sitting in a jeep watching wildlife. So, to those who are unsure, I feel compelled to explain just how incredible a safari experience is.
Firstly, the world “safari” absolutely doesn’t just mean driving around in a jeep looking for animals from the Lion King! The word safari comes from the Swahili word meaning ‘to travel’. And thus, a safari is also a personal journey, which adds to and enhances your world experience.
So, let me share with you my own personal reasons and experiences that might just ignite your own safari wanderlust.
1. Connecting with Africa – An Ancient Continent
As a young trainee expedition leader, the moment I set foot on the rich red African soil of Zimbabwe, I fell in love.
As I journeyed overland up to East Africa, the sheer size and magnificence of the still untouched wilderness took my breath away. The vast, open landscapes, lush savannas, soaring mountains, deep rift valley lakes, vibrant villages and towns and rich jungles painted a different picture every day.
I was entranced, each country had it’s own character and the wildlife was incredible, yes – but only a very small part of the Africa I have come to love deeply. The continent seemed so old, so timeless and misunderstood.
Africa was so much more than I ever expected, and stole my heart.
2. Wildlife Spectacular – Real Life ‘Jurassic Park’
What most people think of as a “Safari” is about getting up close and personal with some of the planet’s most incredible creatures.
No two days are the same. I have literally cried at the pure ferocity of nature, as I’ve watched a pride of lion bring down a buffalo – teeth and claws slashing. Then, later, watched that same pride bask lazily in the golden African sun – the lionesses tenderly licking their cubs with motherly tenderness.
Huge elephants wander through lodge grounds going about their business, and towering giraffes reach high into the tree canopies. Just like something out of Jurassic Park!
And then, after the larger creatures take your breath away, you begin to notice the sheer number of birds, reptiles and other creatures. The depth and intricacies of the African eco-systems is one the world is still lucky to have. And I can honestly say that no where else on earth remains with its scale and vast numbers of large wildlife.
To sit on a rocky outcrop as the African sun sets, watching and listening to the wildlife preparing for night is truly one of the greatest pleasures in life. Helped along with a cool gin and tonic or iced beer!
3. Learning from the Experts
You don’t have to learn of course. You can just enjoy the atmosphere and watching the animals go about their every day lives. However, African safari guides are some of the best on the planet. Many countries expect them to have an encyclopedic range of knowledge before leading a safari. They are proud of the wildlife they and the rangers protect. They will happily share their stories of the animals, their habitats, and the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
A walking safari with a highly trained guide is the most incredible experience. Out there in the bush – on the same level as the wildlife – you will so much more about the flora and fauna.
As one guest put it so well – “A vehicle safari is great – but like watching a movie. Whereas a walking safari is total immersion – like reading the book!”
4. Thrills for both Adventurers and Armchair Travellers
Safari life is an adventure in itself. Bouncing along dusty trails in open-top vehicles, tracking footprints through the bush, kayaking on Rift Valley lakes and mighty rivers, and camping under the star-studded African sky. A safari is a rollercoaster of thrills that keeps you on your toes.
I know of very few holidays which deliver so much, and change the way you view the world in such an intense way.
Yet a safari can be accessed by anyone – adventure doesn’t only mean physical activity. Just sitting on your terrace with a pair of binoculars as a group of elephant amble past is an adventure in itself. For this reason multi-generational safaris are great for the whole family.
5. Capturing the Moments: Photography Heaven!
Safaris are a dream come true for capturing incredible shots. From the golden hour when the savanna glows in warm hues to the action-packed moments when predators hunt. Every second is a potential masterpiece.
Picking the perfect location and using private vehicles and boat safaris allow photographers to get that perfect shot away from the crowds.
Given the sheer range of wildlife and landscapes, even the most amateur photographers will capture some incredible footage and shots.
Top Secret Tip: the Green Season is fabulous for photography. Softer light, dramatic skies, baby animals, less dust and birds in breeding plummage.
6. Disconnecting to Reconnect – the Ultimate “Me Time” Experience
For me one of the great joys of travel, and going on safari in particular is the disconnect from the modern world. It is a chance to get away from city noise, pollution, ringing phones, no emails – just the sounds of nature, peaceful landscapes.
And to experience this with family is even more precious, as you bond and reconnect over the incredible real life experiences, far more intense than anything offered by Tik Tok, Twitter and Facebook.
With a syles of safari lodges ranging from a traditional bush camp to luxury designer inspired lodges, and even tree houses! – there is a safari out there for everyone – from the brave and the bold to the more nervous and cautious.
7. Contributing to Conservation
I have always supported the lodges, camps and suppliers which are deeply involved in wildlife conservation efforts.
By choosing this style of travel, you’re directly supporting initiatives that protect local communities, endangered species and their habitats.
You can visit villages and wildlife projects which benefit from tourism and show that wildlife and humans can live together without conflict when managed sensitively. This is a side of the safari that is often overlooked but which young people and conservation enthusiasts are very much drawn to.
8. Cultural Immersion
Africa is huge, and incredibly diverse. In many rural locations the locals are proud of their traditions and ties to the land. However, living alongside large wildlife can be challenging. Visiting local communities and experiencing their traditions and understanding their difficulties adds a cultural aspect to your journey.
The best lodges have strong bonds with the communities, employing local staff, supporting schools, women’s projects and wildlife protection. And they offer visitors to learn from these communities in meaningful ways.
9. Making Lifetime Memories
Safaris are perfect for bonding with friends and family.
Sharing the thrill of spotting a leopard in the wild or swapping stories around a campfire creates bonds and memories that last a lifetime.
10. Returning Home Inspired – See the Word through Different Eyes
So, why go on safari?
Well, because it changes you. When I returned home after a year taking people through (mainly) rural Africa, everything seemed very strange to me – very fast, very technical, very impersonal, very noisy. I felt like I had slowed down and learnt more about the world during my time there.
I believe everyone should try to go on safari at least once. It ignites a passion for conservation, a deep appreciation for the natural world, and a sense of responsibility to protect it. It’s a journey that leaves an indelible mark on your heart and soul.
So, even if you’ve never dreamed of embarking on a safari, I say, “Go for it!” It’s a life-changing adventure that will leave you with a renewed sense of wonder, a portfolio of amazing photos, and a heart full of wild stories to tell.
